Art residencies play an increasingly important role in the so-called art ecosystem. They are not only multiplying in number but also in form - varying in function, structures and conditions they provide information about todays role of artistic labour imbedded in contemporary culture and a larger economic system.
This book contains a collection of texts dealing with the format of art residencies particularly focusing on the conditions and ethics of working. I have no idea what we are doing follows the notion of understanding residencies as an ongoing process of collective learning and forming a temporary we. From different perspectives, cultural workers write about the residency’s contradictions and potentials, reflecting their particular knowledge and experiences made while hosting or being hosted in a residency programme.
The first part of this publication is situated within a residency at Cripta747 in autumn 2019 in Turin. The second part consists of texts that are either republished or especially written for this publication by invitation.

Le residenze artistiche svolgono un ruolo sempre più importante nel cosiddetto ecosistema artistico. Non solo si moltiplicano per numero, ma anche per formato, e distinguendosi per struttura, funzione e servizi, esse forniscono informazioni sull'attuale ruolo della produzione artistica sia all'interno della cultura contemporanea che in un sistema economico più ampio.
Questo libro contiene una raccolta di testi che indagano il formato delle residenze con una particolare attenzione alle condizioni e all'etica del lavoro. I have no idea what we are doing descrive le residenze come un processo continuo di apprendimento collettivo e che mira a dar vita a un noi temporaneo. Gli operatori culturali invitati a prendere parte alla pubblicazione affrontano le contraddizioni e il potenziale insito nella residenza da diverse prospettive, partendo dalle loro conoscenze ed esperienze personali fatte in veste di host o di guest di una residenza artistica.
La prima parte del volume nasce in occasione di una residenza a Cripta747, a Torino, nell'autunno 2019, mentre la seconda è costituita da testi scritti appositamente o nuovamente pubblicati per questa occasione.
