We are thrilled to announce Cripta747’s participation in the first online edition of DEMO moving image festival. You find us in the Special Projects section, with a newly commissioned Chapter of BLACK MED, a long term research project started in 2018 by Invernomuto.
This edition of the festival focus on the topic of Contagion. Taking the current emergency as a starting point, the notion of Contagion is explored as an aesthetic and political paradigm, through the works by moving image artists and researchers.
Contagion manifests itself as the true dimension of human coexistence; a dimension which crosses boundaries and unfolds through propagation, rather than linear progression. Through this new perspective, elements of human activity usually framed within clearly defined categories – codes of communication, patterns of behaviour, systems of thought, and so on – emerge as the results of constant processes of contamination, which cannot be contained within a spatially and temporally delimited place.
A reality configured as a network of interdependent agents inevitably undermines human pretensions to occupy a privileged position in the cosmos. This has become a condition that can no longer be ignored in redefining our relations with what surrounds us.
In this frame Black Med looks at the Mediterranean Sea as a fluid entity that once facilitated the formation of networks and exchanges across three continents, now turned into a place of a humanitarian crisis and heated geopolitical disputes. Within this complex scenario, Black Med aims to intercept the trajectories that music traces through this protean area, collecting sound materials, which are then presented on a web platform and during listening sessions.
For this edition, it will take the form of a video piece based on a conversation with scholars and cultural practitioners concerning the Mediterranean as a cultural and political space. The discussion will be activated by a selection of songs and sound pieces from the Black Med archive.
